The Artisan Touch to an ancient artform

When we think of branding, we often associate it with brands founded within the last century or so. However, the origins of this original art form stretch much further back.

Where does branding come from?

Branding dates back more than 7,000 years, when artisans in China, India, Greece and Rome used symbols and engravings to differentiate their work. Other references to branding include the Ancient Egyptians using hieroglyphics to brand and identify their possessions, medieval knights displaying coats of arms to show their loyalty and status, and even the Union Jack flag, dating back to 1606, combines different brand identities for England and Scotland into one flag (and later in 1801 included Ireland).

The word branding comes from "brandr"," the Old Norse word meaning "to burn” and refers to the practice of branding livestock. Cattle owners used to brand their cattle or livestock to show ownership, especially when herds from different owners grazed together.

While branding may have evolved over the centuries to encompass more than signifying ownership, craft, status, or loyalty, its aim is still as precise as ever.

Branding is a way to differentiate, distinguish and be distinctive.
