Behind the Scenes of a brand shoot
Images are integral to curating a brand that looks the way it feels. Taking pictures yourself is very tricky, well, unless you’re a dab hand at running around and striking a pose before the timing clicks in.
I’m not talented in that area, so I recently asked Carla Watkins, a brand photographer, to work her magic on a brand photography for The Brand Artisan.
A brand photographer like Carla plays a crucial role in translating your brand's essence and soul into visual content. Carla, for instance, works with “colourful, magical weirdos in business,” which is me to a T, and her style aligns with my brand perfectly. Check out Carla's website to see her portfolio complete with mermaids.
But what actually is a brand Photography Shoot?
A brand photography shoot is a meticulously planned and executed photography (and/or videography) session that's designed to create visual content that aligns to that specific brand. Think of it, like your brand having its own photoshoot, complete with rails of clothes, spotlights and a windmachine (if you’d like one).
A brand photography shoot is not just about taking endless amounts of selfies for socials, but about capturing your brand in every frame. Everything from the style of the images and the location they are taken in, to the colours that feature in the images and even the props, are carefully selected to ensure the final snaps are a true reflection of your brand.
For example, for my shoot, my wardrobe is on-brand colours, we selected quirky venues, and my props included my favourite mug and tools of the trade. All choices that make a huge impact on the finished product.
Photos and images are the visual representation- and therefore extension- of your brand, and the primary way that it’s brought to life for your customers and clients. As the saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words”, and with brand imagery, that is completely true.
Here are some snaps from my Brand Photoshoot with Carla, taken by my daughter. You’ll have to excuse the odd angles- everything becomes a selfie opportunity when you’re 12 years old. 😂 Over on my Instagram there are videos which are much more flattering!!
The above pictures are taken on an iPhone, and I’ll be sharing the snaps from the shoot soon.
So, please remember, when you’re crafting your brand, don’t forget to curate pictures and images that embody your brand. Pictures are an essential part to curating and crafting a brand that stands out above the noise and are memorable, distinctive and inspiring.
